This collection of four short stories contains one of London's best science fiction tales, "The Red One," about a sailor abandoned on a Pacific island who finds an alien spacecraft that landed on earth in the remote past. made me sad and mad to read this book. Her parents lives consisted of running their restaurant and their favorite team's stats. The general movement of the European mind sweeps past us without our being drawn into it, or even looking sufficiently at it to discover in what direction it is tending; and if we had not a tolerably rapid original movement of our own, we should long since have been left in the distance. . Overall I'd rate it pretty dang enjoyable. I do believe that the author served in the Marines. It's a rare book that offers such practical direction for business AND life in such a down-to-earth and valuable way. "Fig Season" is a story about complicated but seemingly ordinary people, who when looked at more closely, are found to be extraordinary.
